REVIEW: Alan Wake's American Nightmare

Everyone's favourite thriller-novelist Alan Wake is back battling The Taken once again.

Developer: Remedy Entertainment | Publisher: Microsoft Studios | Genre: Third-Person / Horror

Windows PC | Xbox 360

As a quick fix to fill the anxious wait for an Alan Wake 2, American Nightmare provides enough satisfaction but lacks key aspects that made the original so good.

Taking place neither before or after the first Alan Wake game, this time around players take control of Wake within the TV show; 'Night Springs' - those who played the original might recognise it. In this specific episode, Wake discovers he has an evil doppelganger known as Mr. Scratch - a violent and disturbed version of himself. Mr. Scratch has a mission to tear away everything Wake holds dear to his heart, quickly making him the biggest threat in the game. Naturally. However, with Wake's ability to alter history and reality, he plans to make use of that to defeat Mr. Scratch and other forces of evil once and for all.

Whilst by definition, this game should be as scary and eerie as the original, it's not - instead Wake is greeted with enemies that are way too easy to defeat, characters that promote humour instead of horror with the exception of Mr. Scratch of course, who is a complete maniac. To reinforce the fact you're playing through a television show, many cutscenes are real life sequences, namely showing off Mr. Scratch's evil doings. Gameplay feels similar to the original, however everything feels so much more casual - the amount of ammo scattered around is so much it often takes away any challenge of defeating The Taken, and whilst this is perfect for some, those looking for a genuine tough time will be disappointed. REVIEW1

The separate arcade mode, which serves as a timed survival onslaught of enemies, provides the most challenging gameplay, especially on Nightmare mode - this is a nice addition and gives you something extra to do upon finishing the main game. Speaking of which, this game is short - very short. There are 3 acts, which are replayed over and over but with different scenarios due to Wake's ability to alter history, and whilst this sounds like a great way of mixing up the gameplay, it doesn't - instead you go on the same fetch quests you just did but with a slight twist each time.

Wake's primary methods of disposing the Taken is through his trusty flashlight and pistol - "it's gonna be like that again, huh?", Wake says appropriately upon discovering those familiar weapons, which is also a nice nod to the original. Speaking of the original - you are once again able to collect manuscripts to expand the narrative or they can be used to unlock weapon crates, usually containing powerful weapons such as a shotgun or the fully automatic carbine. Also spread around each level are TVs and radio players, often consisting of strange broadcasts from Mr. Scratch as well everyone's favourite talk show; Night Springs Radio. It's nice being  able to collect all of these things as it adds a depth of replayability and a further understanding of the events surrounding the game.

Once again, you can find refuge in numerous safe havens, giving you a breather from taking on the Taken, although most are generally easy to defeat. Apart from the usual type of Taken, you'll often be greeted with The Splitter - a newly introduced enemy that multiplies its presence upon being shot at, making for interesting gameplay in terms of how you take on this particular enemy. Other notable enemies include hordes of spiders who don't have any type of shield, making them easy to kill but can cause a minor challenge when a large group of them surround you at once - nothing a flash grenade can't sort out.

Overall, American Nightmare provides a further insight into the life of Alan Wake even though the narrative has nothing to do with the original - it's still nice being able to control Alan once again. A variety of enemies will keep you in the action long enough to forget about the repetitive fetch quests - a ton of replayability is available, especially with the arcade mode, which will truly test your skills. The length is the game's true downfall - reusing environments from previous levels doesn't really keep your interest long enough to be convinced this game is actually long, maybe with more original levels this would have been a much more satisfying experience. With that said, this isn't a full retail game so it can get away with being short in length, but it would be nice to have the same experience as the original - unfortunately, this game doesn't provide that.

NEWS: Microsoft Discuss Halo 2 Anniversary's Multiplayer

The multiplayer aspect in the highly anticipated Halo 2 remake would have "to be fantastic."

Speaking with IGN, Microsoft Game Studies boss Phil Spencer has highlighted some of the most important features which would have to be included in the Halo 2 remake.

Spencer initially discusses important moments during the original release of Halo 2 back in November 2004:

"In this fiticious world where that game existed", he says whilst smiling according to IGN - "it's an easy answer: it has to be just the multiplayer experience that we all found in that first Halo 2 game. If you think about what happened in the franchise and what were the hallmark moments - when did duel wielding come in, when did another playable character that wasn't Master Chief come in?"

More notably, Spencer goes on to speak on the multiplayer:

"All of the things that you and I know about the evolution of the franchise, if you're going to say one thing about Halo 2, you're going to talk about real multiplayer. I think you just have to nail that in just such a fundamentally core way. Frankly [we'd have to do it] probably better than we did with Halo 1 Anniversary. I thought the multiplayer in Halo 1 Anniversary was good, but Halo 1 never had multiplayer in the truest sense, so it always was going to be something different."

Although Spencer only speaks in a way which indicates the anniversary remake is yet to be announced, Master Chief's voice actor Steve Downes recently said:

"What you can look forward to this year is an anniversary edition of Halo 2."

Halo 2 was one of the most successful titles to incorporate online multiplayer during the lifespan of the original Xbox - the servers were shut down April 2010.

NEWS: Nintendo Won't Appear At PAX East 2014

Speaking with Polygon, a Nintendo spokesperson has said:

"Interacting directly with our fans and letting them play our games firsthand is a key component of our approach."

"That doesn't include PAX East this year, but we will offer our fans a variety of opportunities to get their hands on Nintendo products in 2014."

Sony will not be attending this year's event either, however other big companies including Microsoft, Square Enix, Blizzard, 2K Games, Double Fine, Twitch, Oculus VR, and Ubisoft are to make an appearance showing off their respective products.

NEWS: Halo 2 Anniversary Becomes Increasingly Possible

The voice-actor for Master Chief has given very brief details regarding the release of Halo 2 Anniversary.

Although it's not an official announcement by any means, Master Chief voice-actor Steve Downes has spoken on the release of a Halo 2 remake, as well as Halo 5.

Speaking with Gamezone, Downes gave the impression people shouldn't be expecting a 2014 release of Halo 5, and that we shouldn't "expect anything until 2015.", going on to say "What you can look forward to this year is an anniversary edition of Halo 2."

Rumours of the remake have been lingering for quite some time, especially since the anniversary edition of the original Halo released in 2011. Hopefully more details will arise soon.

NEWS: Amazon UK - PS4 and Xbox One Pre-Orders May Not Arrive Until After Christmas

The Amazon UK retailer has said not all PS4 and Xbox One pre-orders will be delivered in time for Christmas.

Those who have pre-ordered either an Xbox One or PS4 console (or both) from mid-November can expect delays in their orders, and could very well not play the new consoles until after Christmas. The PS4 section of the website lists a number of pre-order conditions and the chances of the console getting to you:

● Customers who pre-ordered this console up to and including August 6 have been given an option to get a PS4 for release day.

● Customers who pre-ordered this console from August 7 up to and including November 13 will receive their consoles before Christmas.

● Customers who pre-order this console from November 14 will receive their consoles after Christmas.

● Customers who cancel existing pre-orders and place a new order will not get their console for release day.

The same applies for the Xbox One practically, although it states pre-orders from November 13 can be expected after Christmas, although this isn't set in stone - many pre-orders could still make it on launch day. The Xbox One section reads similar conditions as the PS4:

● Customers who pre-ordered this console up to and including August 6 have been given an option to get a PS4 for release day.

● Customers who pre-ordered this console from August 7 up to and including November 13 will receive their consoles before Christmas.

● Customers who pre-order this console from November 14 will receive their consoles after Christmas.

● Customers who cancel existing pre-orders and place a new order will not get their console for release day.

The current bid stands at $11,100,00 with just under four days left - expect the price to raise even further as the auction comes to an end, there are 67 bidders at the moment.

PREVIEW: Dead Rising 3 - Story Trailer

New story trailer reveals what players can expect in the exclusive Xbox One title - lots of blood and hordes of zombies.

The trailer shows Dead Rising 3's main character Nick Ramos, a mechanic who is now wandering alone 3 days after the outbreak took place.

During a mad rush through hordes of flesh-thirsty Zombies, Ramos is bitten on the hand, and is simply told "Nick - honey, you're gonna turn in the next few hours", not very reassuring but at least it's the truth.

Soon after, we see Ramos and fellow survivors slaughter zombies using any means necessary - massive explosions, custom made sharp objects, and so forth. This alone sets the tone for the entire game, players can expect to kill of large amounts of zombies just like previous installments.

With the pressure of turning into a zombie at any moment, another threat is added with the knowledge that the miltiary forces are planning to complete annihilate the fictional city of Los Perdidos, along with any living or dead inhabitants.

The game will be exclusive to Xbox One, and will release November 22 along with the console's launch.

PREVIEW: Xbox One - Demonstration Video

A 12-minute long demonstration video shows off what the Xbox One has to offer and the experience its users can expect.

Xbox executives Yusuf Mehdi and Marc Whitten have performed a lengthy demo of the upcoming Xbox One, which launches later in the month. The video shows off the console's core features, amongst other functions.

Users will be able to customise the home page to suit their needs - a "pins" tab will enable you to place your favourite games, apps, movies, etc in a nice space catered to ease your accessibility to the content you most want to get to. No matter which Xbox One console you log into, your customized information and layouts will be remembered and automatically apply after logging in.

Voice-recognition is also shown, allowing users to voice certain actions which the console will then fulfill - examples shown were logging in and jumping straight into a paused game of Forza Motorsport 5. The 1080p Kinect sensor kit is needed to do such things, which will come with all Xbox One consoles.

Another selling point was the ability to watch live TV, all whilst still being able to accept game-invites if you want to stay in contact with your friends. The 'OneGuide' will let you watch TV with ease, allowing easy access to favourite TV shows, listings of current TV content, and finally app-related channels such as HuluPlus.

Popular communication outlet Skype will help Xbox One users to interact with each other, the view will alternate when a person (or animal) moves using the Kinect's ability to read skeletal frames to make sure the other receiver is getting the full shot.

Game DVR will let you record a recent piece of gameplay you might want to show off, which can then be edited in 'Upload' - the app will let you add commentary to that particular clip and pick a skin to personalise the content further. Check out the full demonstration video below.
